</head>
      <p>George Lee Armbrister essentially was a man of many trades working as a merchant, embalmer, writer, funeral home director, and carpenter at various stages in his life.  He opened a carpentry shop on West Bond Street in Max Meadows during the 1890s.  He gradually expanded his services to include hardware, cabinets, and funeral arrangements.

      <p>Armbrister served as president of the Max Meadows Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member.  he married twice and had thirteen children and step-children.</p>

</head>
      <p>This ledger chronicles purchases made by customers at the George Lee Armbrister hardware, general merchandise, and furniture store in Max Meadows, Virginia between 1914 and 1916.  An alphabetical name index is in the front of the ledger.  The main body records purchases.  Each entry contains the date, items or services purchased, and amount of purchases.  Monthly accounts of cash received and paid appear interspersed in the ledger.  The ledger contains 372 pages, excluding the name index.
