    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Hatty, a resident of West Newton, Massachusetts, penned the letter to her mother during the nineteenth century. Containing a postage stamp from Hartford, Connecticut, the letter describes the condition and habits of her husband who was inflicted with the measles. The letter also mentions Hatty's personal health and her trip to Washington where she met President John Tyler. Hatty noted the president particularly noticed her status as the only woman in company at the White House.</p>  </bioghist>
