    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Juneteenth, a portmanteau of "June Nineteenth," marks the day in 1865 that U.S. General Gordon Granger arrived with his troops in Galveston, Texas to read General Orders No. 3, "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Exceutive of the United States, all slaves are free." </p><p>Juneteenth became a Virginia state holiday in October 2020, and was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.</p><p>William &amp; Mary celebrated Juneteenth in person for the first time on June 17, 2022, at the site of "Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved." </p>  </bioghist>
