William H. Cabell was the son of Colonel Nicholas Cabell and Hannah Carrington Cabell. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the College of Willilam and Mary in 1793. He started his career as a lawyer and later entered politics. He was the 14th Governor of Virginia.
There were three generations of William Cabells who were surveyors. Dr. William Cabell (1700-1774) was a physician and assistant surveyor of Goochland and Albemarle Counties, Virginia under Joshua Fry and William Mayo. His son William Cabell (1729/30-1798) was also assistant surveyor of Albemarle County and surveyor of Amherst County, Virginia. His son and the third William Cabell (b. 1759) was surveyor of Amherst County, Virginia. Appointment of Joel Ward as a Captain of a Troop of Cavalry in the Third Regiment and Third Division of the Militia in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Signed by William H. Cabell, Governor. September 6, 1806. "Berkeley" is noted on the bottom. On the reverse is written "Joel Ward was duly sworn to act under and did act under the within commission untill after the war with England declared by the US in the year 1812, ...year 1816 he resigned."
