    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>Letter from Benjamin Waller, Williamsburgh [Virginia] to Walter King, Merchant in Bristol, about a legal case Waller is handling for King. Mentions that the courts can't meet "because the Governor was not in the Countrey" but "since I am under so many Seals certified by the Governor to be Clerk of the General Court...if you give them copies...will not put you and themselves to the great expence of new records..." Mentions King's judgement against Hunter, creditors of James Bray obtained a "decree in the County Court of James City but upon an Appeal to the General Court last Month their Honors adjudged that Slaves might be intailed before the Negro Act in 1727 and that after the Death of Tenant in Tail they were no more liable for his Debts and reversed the County Courts Decree and ordered us the Creditors to pay all Costs. This Dec[ree] affects the Credit of the Countrey greatly..." May 12, 1753. Transcript included.</p><p> Walter King was a Merchant in Williamsburg, Virginia from about 1735 to 1751 and later a Merchant in Bristol, England.</p>  </scopecontent>
