    <head>Biographical Information:</head>
<p>John Barton Payne, a lawyer, was born in Pruntytown, W. Va. 26 January 1855. He was admitted to the bar in 1876. He practiced law in Preston County, W. Va. before moving to Chicago where he practiced 1883-1893. He was judge of the Superior Court, Cook County, Illinois. 1893-1898, Secretary of the Interior 1920-1921 and chairman of the American Red Cross. His paintings and monetary gift were the impetus behind the founding of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Barton died in 1935.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>A number of manuscript volumes from this collection have been removed an cataloged separately, including the an autograph album and guest book of Charles P. Bryan, 1892-1917 (MsV Auto3), a scrapbook concerning Charles P. Bryan, 1913-1917 (MsV Sc3), a record of Thomas P. Bryan's religious sermons, 1862-1900 (MsV Sel), and the photograph albums of Charles P. Bryan, ca. 1865-1910 (MsV P1-2).</p><p> A copy of the will of John Barton Payne was separated from the College Papers Collection (UA 14) and was added to this collection on 6/8/2012.</p>  </separatedmaterial>
