This collection is composed of the correspondence, a certificate, Myers' commencement remarks, and a list of books of College of William and Mary student Samuel Myers. The letters includes Myers' career plans, events in Williamsburg including a near-duel Myers was involved in, and other matters. Filed in same box as Mss. 95 M99 Samuel Myers Papers as folder 2.
The letter dated April 10-17, 1808 is one single correspondence with his brother John spread out through the week. Myers shares his plan of becoming a lawyer although his brother suggests he pursue mathematics.
The letter dated August 10, 1808 is from Littleton Tazewell to Samuel Myers mentioning the death and funeral of a Mr. Tyler.
The letter dated October 26, 1808 contains very cordial address to his family about his experience at the College. Some things mentioned are slaves owned by the College, the death of student, Mr. Blount, son of a former Governor of Tennessee. Also mentioned are the escapades of other students such as the planning of a ball without consent.
The letter dated January 30, 1809 was written by Samuel to his father, Moses Myers, asking forgiveness for nearly entering into a duel with a student by the name of William C. Somerville.
These letters explain the situation between Samuel Myer and fellow student William C. Somerville with whom Myer nearly entered into a duel.
Also contained is Samuel Myers comments made at his commencement ceremony on July 4, 1809.
