Marian Anderson was an American contralto and figure in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, Anderson became the first African American woman to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. Anderson performed at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Anderson recieved numerous awards including the first Presidental Medal of Freedom.
