This book was offset printed by the artist on the Heidelbert GTO 52 (eine farben) press at the Center for Book, Paper & Print at Columbia College Chicago with the guidance of Brad Freeman during the Winter of 2016. The paper is Mohawk Superfine ultrawhite smooth 100lb text. This book was produced with generous assistance from The Caxton Club of Chicago and the Albert P. Weisman Award"--Colophon. Publication date from colophon. To create an active portrait of Lake Michigan, the artist created cyanotype prints at ten Chicago beaches. Butler coated six inch square sheets of paper with a UV-sensitive solution, exposing them in the Lake water at varying depths and exposure times, and then washing and fixing the prints with Lake water. "The Lake became both a material and a collaborator." The images are reproduced on each page, along with the artists observations at the time. In the printing process inks were adjusted on the press, so that each edition of the book is unique.
