    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
John R. Goldsborough, brother of Rear Admiral Louis M. Goldsborough, was born on July 2, John R. Goldsborough, brother of Rear Admiral Louis M. Goldsborough, was born on July 2, 1809 in Washington, D. C. He began his navy career as a young child, as a cadet-midshipman, and was appointed midshipman in the Mediterranean Squadron at the age of 15. In 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War, Goldsborough participated in the Union blockade of Savannah, Georgia. He was commissioned as a captain in 1862, accepted the command of the USS <emph/>"italics"&gt;Florida</bioghist> of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and served as the senior naval officer in the Union blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. For a brief period in 1862, he was placed in charge of a settlement of former slaves at St. Simons Island, Georgia, after which he took command of the <emph render="italics">Colorado</emph> and headed the blockade off Mobile, Alabama. Most of the letters in the first series of this collection were addressed to Goldsborough while he commanded the <emph render="italics">Colorado</emph>. For the last years of the war, Goldsborough was an ordinance duty officer at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire. He was promoted to commodore during an Asian voyage in April 1867 and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1870.

Commodore Henry Haywood Bell, author of eight letters in this collection, was born in North Carolina in 1808, a native southerner who fought for the Union. He was appointed midshipman in 1823 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1831, commander in 1854, commodore in 1862, and rear admiral in 1866. His letters to Goldsborough were written in 1863 from the steam sloop <emph render="italics">Pensacola</emph> off New Orleans, where he was the temporary commander of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, after Admiral David Farragut was relieved of that position by Rear Admiral David Porter.

Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee, author of six letters in this collection and cousin of General Robert E. Lee, was born in Fairfax County, Virginia on Feb 13, 1812. He became a midshipman from Virginia at the age of thirteen and participated in the Mexican-American War in 1846. Lee received his commission as a commander in 1855 and took command of the sloop-of-war, <emph render="italics">Vidalia</emph>, in 1858. He had been ordered to the East Indies when he heard of the outbreak of the Civil War, and he returned to the United States to fight for the Union. In 1862, he was made Acting Rear Admiral (a rank that was later made permanent) and Commander of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. In that post, he commanded the Flag Ship <emph render="italics">Philadelphia</emph>, the ship from which his letters to Goldsborough in this collection were addressed in December of 1862 and January of 1963. Lee retired from active navy service in 1873. </archdesc>

    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>This collection falls chronologically between 1845 and 1868, though most of the letters were written in 1862 and 1863, the middle years of the American Civil War. Geographically, the letters originated primarily in ships and naval yards along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States, including Port Royal, New Orleans, Hampton Roads, and New York, though an 1868 letter from the Flag Ship <emph render="italics">Nagasaki</emph> appears to have been sent by Commodore Rowan from Asian waters. Topically, the letters consist largely of orders and other matters of Union naval business. Specifically, mention is made of sickness aboard Goldsborough's ship, blockade duty and the movements of troops, and requests for additional men and supplies. Several interesting letters refer to "Contrabands," which usually referred to newly freed African Americans, after General Benjamin Butler labeled them "contraband of war" in 1861.</p><p><emph render="bold">Series I: Goldsborough</emph><br/>
The first series contains letters addressed to John R. Goldsborough, which make up more than two thirds of the collection (34 of the 47). The Goldsborough series begins with a letter from Captain J. S. Lardner on March 25, 1862, concerning a threat to Edisto Island, which was "'at this time menaced by the Enemy' and requesting a gunboat". This letter is followed by 29 letters in 1862 and 1863, three letters in 1865, and two letters from Admiral Rowan in 1868. The most frequent writers of the letters in this series are Rear Admiral S. P. Lee and Commodore H. H. Bell, but the series also includes letters from Commander S. Godon, Admiral S. F. DuPont, Commander H. Paulding, Rear Admiral A. H. Foote, and others. Primary topics of the correspondence in this series include orders and movements of blockade ships, requisitions, and concerns about a contagious fever (one letter calls it measles) on board Goldsborough's ship, the Colorado, for which it was quarantined. It should be noted that at least two letters contain references to a "copy enclosed" (Radford to Goldsborough, Jan 1863) or an "accompanying letter" (Morris to Senior Officer Off Mobile) that were not in the collection when it was received.</p><p><emph render="bold">Series II: Other Correspondence</emph><br/>
The second series is made up of letters addressed to people other than Goldsborough (13 of the 47 letters). This series contains a larger share of non-naval correspondence, and begins with a letter from Isaac Lea to William Blanchard, partners in a Philadelphia publishing firm, dated June 7, 1845. Following this is a 10-page letter, dated Aug 1860, from J. W. Ward to H. C. Baird, regarding the political climate in America during the run-up to the 1860 election. Notable names of correspondents in this series include Rear Admiral David Farragut, Commodore R. B. Hitchcock, and Henry C. Carey, an economist who was the addressee of several of the letters. It should be noted that the February 2, 1864 letter to Carey is unsigned and appears incomplete. This series ends with a file of three undated and either unsigned, unaddressed, or illegible notes.</p> </scopecontent>
