      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This addition to the papers of 
         <persname>Louis J. Halle, Jr.</persname>(b. 1910), political
         scientist and naturalist, consists of the correspondence, 1979
         and 1984-1994, ca. 250 items (1 Hollinger box) between Halle
         and 
         <persname>Herbert S. Bailey, Jr.</persname>, former Director
         of the 
         <corpname>Princeton University Press</corpname>, accompanied
         by copies of each others poetry, observations, essays, and
         newsclippings, chiefly concerning scholarly and philosophical
         questions of mutual interest. Several of Halle's manuscripts
         such as 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Food for Thought</bibref>(renamed 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Butterfly Effect</bibref>), 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Road to Avalon</bibref>, and his books 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Men and Nations</bibref>, 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Cold War as History</bibref>and 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Appreciation of Birds</bibref>are discussed
         throughout the correspondence. Bailey and Halle also offered
         advice and constructive criticism of each other's literary
         work as it was being produced.</p>
