      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This collection consists of 36 items, 1977-1994, chiefly
         correspondence, pertaining to the literary matters and the
         writing career of 
         <persname>John Casey</persname>. Letters of August 17 &amp;
         November 1, 1977, from 
         <persname>Carl D. Brandt</persname>, of 
         <corpname>Brandt &amp; Brandt</corpname>, discuss literary
         matters of Casey. On October 13, 1983, 
         <persname>Michael Mewshaw</persname>(1943-) writes concerning
         becoming a temporary visiting writer at the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>while the search is
         conducted for a replacement for 
         <persname>Peter Taylor</persname>(1917-). Mewshaw also
         mentions the 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Life for Death</title></bibref>libel suit and his book 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Short Circuit</title></bibref>being in the same light as 
         <persname>Paul Theroux</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Great Railway Bazaar</title></bibref>. On March 4, 1989, 
         <persname>Danny Julian Boggs</persname>(1944-) writes on the 
         <corpname>Dartmouth</corpname>issue. An April 10, 1990 letter,
         from 
         <persname>Joseph Connors</persname>of the 
         <corpname>American Academy</corpname>in 
         <geogname>Rome</geogname>, offers Casey a residency in writing
         at the academy. On January 31, 1992, 
         <persname>Rebecca Brown</persname>(1956-) writes on her work
         with AIDS victims and the publication of her book 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Terrible Girls</title></bibref>. On May 22, 1992, 
         <persname>Hilary Masters</persname>remarks on the acceptance
         of 
         <persname>Erika Lynn Gentry</persname>into the program at the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>and comments on 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>and 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">An American Romance</title></bibref>.</p>
      <p>There is also material sent on October 15, 1993 by 
         <persname>Helen F. Pancake</persname>concerning the royalties
         on 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Stories of Breece D'J Pancake</title></bibref>[by 
         <persname>James Alan McPherson</persname>] and a new book on 
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>by 
         <persname>Tom Douglass</persname>; enclosed is a photograph of
         the woodcut of Breece. There are also notes [October 1993] on
         staging "Snow White" at 
         <corpname>Live Arts</corpname>in 
         <geogname>Charlottesville, Virginia</geogname>. There are two
         letters, January 26 &amp; July 20, 1994, from 
         <persname>Richard [Jones]</persname>in London, which discuss
         various topics: clash between 
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>and Mrs. Meade,
         Maalouf's 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Child's Play</title></bibref>, 
         <persname>Peter Taylor</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Oracle at Stoneleigh Court</title></bibref>, 
         <persname>Cormac McCarthy</persname>'s (1933-) 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">All the Pretty Horses</title></bibref>, 
         <persname>Paul Watkins</persname>(1964-), 
         <persname>Mary Lee Settle</persname>, political matters in 
         <geogname>England</geogname>, 
         <persname>Julia Crampton</persname>'s book on Maidenhall, 
         <persname>Lori de Lawter</persname>, and 
         <persname>Nina Fitzpatrick</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Fables of the Irish Intelligentsia</title></bibref>.</p>
      <p>A March 27, 1994 letter from 
         <persname>Helen F. Pancake</persname>mentions Casey's showing
         at the 
         <corpname>McGuffey Art Center</corpname>and encloses a letter
         from 
         <persname>Michael O'Rourke</persname>, author of 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Darkling</title></bibref>, who comments on the magnificent work of 
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>. On April 29, 1994, 
         <persname>Tom Douglass</persname>writes concerning his book on
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>and comments on certain
         letters to be used in the book; enclosed are transcripts of
         letters, March 25, 1979, from Pancake to Casey. A letter,
         September 12, [1994], from 
         <persname>Jodi [Boston?]</persname>refers to Casey's apparent
         request for the return of his letters so that they may be
         placed at the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia Library</corpname>. There is
         also a draft for a citation for 
         <persname>William Gaddis</persname>' (1922-) 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">A Frolic of His Own</title></bibref>.</p>
      <p>Other items of notice are a photograph, June 27 n.y., of 
         <persname>John Casey</persname>rowing at 
         <geogname>Rivanna Reservoir</geogname>, and a brochure for the
         <corpname>Sewanee Writers' Conference</corpname>for the summer
         of 1994.</p>
