    <bioghist>
      <head>Biographical Sketch</head>
      <p><persname>Briscoe Gerard Baldwin</persname>was born on January
         18, 1789, in 
         <geogname>Winchester, Virginia</geogname>, the eldest son of 
         <persname>Cornelius Baldwin</persname>and 
         <persname>Mary Briscoe</persname>. He attended 
         <corpname>William and Mary College</corpname>and later studied
         law under Judge 
         <persname>William Daniel</persname>in 
         <geogname>Cumberland County, Virginia</geogname>. During
         1818-1820 he served in the 
         <corpname>Virginia House of Delegates</corpname>as
         representative for 
         <geogname>Augusta County</geogname>and in 18291830 was a
         member of the constitutional convention. He returned to the
         House of Delegates during 1841-1842. On January 29, 1842,
         Baldwin was elected a member of the 
         <corpname>Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia</corpname>and
         held that position until his death on May 18, 1852.</p>

      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This accession is comprised of thirty-six items, 1786-1882,
         primarily letters to 
         <persname>Briscoe G. Baldwin</persname>and 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>, lawyers in 
         <geogname>Staunton, Virginia</geogname>. Also included are a
         dinner invitation from the Minister of 
         <geogname>France</geogname>to 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>; two certificates
         of membership for 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>in the 
         <corpname>Virginia Historical Society</corpname>; a
         handwritten poem entitled "Hope"; two newspaper clippings, one
         regarding the Whig party in 1844 and another regarding
         Southern debts owed to Northerners after the Civil War; and an
         unsigned printed petition, 1848-1849, regarding internal
         improvements in 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>.</p>
      <p>The letters to 
         <persname>Briscoe G. Baldwin</persname>are primarily from his
         wife, 
         <persname>Martha S. Baldwin</persname>, or his daughter, 
         <persname>Frances C. Stuart</persname>, regarding family
         matters but there are also letters from others regarding legal
         and business matters. These correspondents include 
         <persname>J. E. Brown</persname>, 
         <persname>M. F. Eskridge</persname>, and 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>. Letters to 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>regard business and
         legal matters and a variety of political topics including
         secession, reconstruction, the "Negro problem,' and Fillmore's
         cabinet. Correspondents include 
         <persname>Charles Francis Adams, Jr.</persname>, 
         <persname>J. Lidball</persname>, 
         <persname>R. W. Clelland</persname>, 
         <persname>Joseph Baldwin</persname>, 
         <persname>Nathan K. Hall</persname>, 
         <persname>James H. Dooley</persname>, 
         <persname>Thomas Hall</persname>, and 
         <persname>George C. Whiting</persname>. One letter, September
         20, 1786, was written by 
         <persname>Thomas Hall</persname>to 
         <persname>Archibald Stuart</persname>( 
         <persname>Alexander H. H. Stuart</persname>'s father) and
         concerns Hall's supposed drinking problem, family news, the
         last military expeditions of 
         <persname>George Rogers Clark</persname>, the desire of 
         <geogname>Kentucky</geogname>to separate from 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>, and local politicians 
         <persname>Joseph Crockett</persname>and 
         <persname>John Fowler</persname>.</p>
