        <p>BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES</p>
<p><persname>Edwin Gilliam Booth</persname>was born on January
            11, 1810, at "
            <corpname>Shenstone</corpname>, "
            <geogname>Nottoway County</geogname>, to
            <persname>Gilliam Booth</persname>and
<persname>Rebecca (Hicks) Booth</persname>. At age ten he
            was sent to
            <corpname>Winfield Academy</corpname>in
            <geogname>Dinwiddie County</geogname>, where he began a
            friendship with
<persname>Theodorick Pryor</persname>, who later became one
of the most influential and successful ministers in
            southeastern
            <geogname>Virginia</geogname>. His chief preparation for
            college was at
            <geogname>Oxford, North Carolina</geogname>; he
            matriculated at the
<corpname>University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill</corpname>in 1824, (at the age of fourteen) after an
arduous course in classics and mathematics. Subsequently,
            he studied law at
            <geogname>Fredericksburg</geogname>under the supervision of
            Judge
            <persname>John Taylor Lomax</persname>, a professor at the
            <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>and a judge of
            the
            <corpname>Court of Appeals</corpname>; and, although not a
well-disciplined student, he was diligent in his quest for
legal knowledge, and afterward returned to
<geogname>Nottoway County</geogname>to practice law in the
            five southeastern counties of
            <geogname>Virginia</geogname>.</p>
        <p>In 1833, he married
            <persname>Sarah Tanner Jones</persname>(May 10, 1811,
-August 29, 1860) with whom he had five children:
            <persname>Edwin Gilliam Booth, Jr.</persname>, (February
            27, 1839 -January 5, 1922);
            <persname>Archer Jones Booth</persname>(May 22, 1844
            -November 22, 1864);
            <persname>Frances Rebecca Booth</persname>(December 17,
            1846 -June 7, 1885);
            <persname>Sarah Tanner Booth</persname>(June 3, 1848
            -September 23, 1865); and,
            <persname>William Travis Booth</persname>(July 12, 1850
            -June 25, 1861).</p>
<p>Booth was known for his public spirit and devotion to
politics, his activities for the welfare of man and for the
promotion of Christianity. On August 30, 1838, he made a
public profession of his faith in Christ, and was soon made
            the ruling elder in the
            <corpname>Nottoway Church</corpname>. In 1847, he was
elected from the Nottoway District to serve in the
            <corpname>Virginia Legislature</corpname>for the 1848 and
1849 sessions, and took part in the revision and
codification of the civil laws of
<geogname>Virginia</geogname>. During the Civil War, he
attempted to alleviate the miseries of military prisons by
obtaining permission to assist friends in prison. He
            received permission from President
            <persname>Abraham Lincoln</persname>to pass through the
blockade in April 1863, and dined with Lincoln and Davis
over the month, by their invitations. In 1876, he erected
the Old Virginia Building at the
            <corpname>National Centennial Exhibition</corpname>in
            <geogname>Fairmont Park, Philadelphia</geogname>.</p>
<p><persname>Edwin Gilliam Booth, Sr.</persname>, passed away
            on February 13, 1886 in
            <geogname>Philadelphia</geogname>.</p>
<p>More information on Booth may be found in

<p><persname>Edwin Gilliam Booth, Jr.</persname>, was born on
            February 27, 1839, in
            <geogname>Nottoway County</geogname>to
            <persname>Edwin Gilliam Booth</persname>and
            <persname>Sarah Tanner (Jones) Booth</persname>. He
            attended
            <corpname>Winfield Academy</corpname>,
<geogname>Dinwiddie County</geogname>, and was prepared for
            college by
            <persname>David Comfort</persname>, a Princeton graduate.
            He then attended
            <corpname>Hampton-Sydney College</corpname>for two years,
graduating in 1859, and spent part of a session at the
            <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>before enrolling
            in the
            <corpname>University of Pennsylvania</corpname>at
Philadelphia where he graduated as a doctor of medicine in
            1861.</p>
<p>During the Civil War, he enlisted in the
            <corpname>Confederate Army</corpname>as a member of the
            <corpname>Nottoway Cavalry</corpname>in the G and E
            companies of the
            <corpname>Third Virginia Regiment</corpname>. His company
            fought at the Battle of
            <persname>Big Bethel</persname>on June 10, 1861. On May 1,
1863, he was commissioned as assistant surgeon in the
            <corpname>Confederate Navy</corpname>, and was a surgeon on
the C. S. S. Selma during the Battle of
<geogname>Mobile Bay</geogname>, where their fleet was
defeated and the steamer was sunk on August 5, 1864. He was
            taken prisoner and sent to
            <geogname>Pensacola</geogname>, and later released on
            parole.</p>
        <p>After the war he visited
<geogname>Europe</geogname>, then returned to live at "
<corpname>Shenstone</corpname>" until ca. 1886 when he
            moved to "
            <corpname>Carter's Grove</corpname>, " James City County.
            In October 1870, he married
            <persname>Clara Haxall Thomson</persname>of
            <geogname>Jefferson County, West Virginia</geogname>; they
            had the following children:
