      <p>This collection consists of the business, legal, and
         personal correspondence of the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>of 
         <geogname>New Market, Virginia</geogname>, and contains 356
         letters (2 Hollinger boxes), 1800-1829, and undated, the
         majority of which are in German. The correspondents include 
         <persname>John Gruber</persname>of 
         <geogname>Hagerstown, Maryland</geogname>, concerning book
         purchases and the printing business in 
         <geogname>New Market</geogname>; 
         <persname>Ambrose Henkel</persname>, 
         <geogname>Golden Spring, Rowan County, North
         Carolina</geogname>, and 
         <geogname>Baltimore, Maryland</geogname>, where he worked in a
         bookstore for a time, about family matters, preaching in the
         Lutheran Church, and book sales; letters from miscellaneous
         members of the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>; 
         <persname>Charles Henkel</persname>; 
         <persname>Jacob Henkel</persname>; 
         <persname>Paul Henkel</persname>(6 folders of 126 letters); 
         <persname>Philip Henkel</persname>(5 folders of 110 letters);
         the business of 
         <corpname>Samuel &amp; S. Jackson</corpname>, late 
         <corpname>David &amp; S. Jackson</corpname>; 
         <persname>Gideon L. Jones</persname>; and 
         <corpname>Samuel Sower &amp; Company</corpname>.</p>
