      <p>Additional papers of the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>of 
         <geogname>New Market, Virginia</geogname>, and the 
         <corpname>Tennessee Synod of the Lutheran Church</corpname>,
         1792-1915, and undated, 135 items (1 Hollinger box), including
         manuscripts, essays, sermons, correspondence, hymns, church
         records and reports, receipts, and genealogical notes.</p>
      <p>Items pertaining to the history of the 
         <corpname>Henkel Press</corpname>include: 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Verrichtung Der Special-Conferenz Der Evang. Luth.
            Prediger Im Staat Virginien Gehalten in Rockingham County
            in Der Neuen Roderskirche Den 6 October 1806</title></bibref>which is the first publication of the 
         <corpname>Henkel Press</corpname>and the first major effort by
         a German printer in 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>; 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Kirchliches Jahrbuch</title></bibref>(1829); 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">David Henkel Against the Unitarians</title></bibref>(1830), appearing as a series of letters from 
         <persname>David Henkel</persname>and written on rice paper;
         the index and preface, written by 
         <persname>Charles Henkel</persname>, for the 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Church Hymn Book</title></bibref>(1838); an incomplete sermon book and a smaller
         sermon book both believed to be in the hand of [ 
         <persname>Paul Henkel</persname>]; an essay written by 
         <persname>Moses Henkel</persname>, "A Dialogue Between Mr.
         Hard and Mr. Soft"; and a translation of 
         <persname>John Heubner</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Bible History</title></bibref>.</p>
      <p>Material concerning the history of the 
         <corpname>Tennessee Synod of the Lutheran
         Church</corpname>include: "Abstract of the Official Report of
         a Synodical Meeting Held in 
         <geogname>Hanover County</geogname>"; "Action of the Delegates
         of the 
         <corpname>Evangelical Lutheran Tennessee Synod</corpname>.
         .."; Church Statistics; "Ecclesiastical Annals and Evangelical
         Fragments -Report of the Transactions of the 
         <corpname>Evangelical Lutheran Tennessee Synod</corpname>, "
         including a treatise on regeneration; Notes and Report on
         Synodical Matters relating to 
         <geogname>North Carolina</geogname>and 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>, including a draft authorizing 
         <persname>David Henkel</persname>to compile a hymn book;
         Papers re the history of the 
         <corpname>Evangelical Lutheran Tennessee Synod</corpname>;
         Reports of the 
         <corpname>Tennessee Synod</corpname>Meetings; and the related
         item, the "Proclamation addressed to the 
         <corpname>North Carolina Synod</corpname>Meeting."</p>
      <p>Other manuscripts include "Admonitions for Youngsters,"
         "Concerning the Current Custom," and "Should so-called Union
         Sunday Schools be organized in country school houses."</p>
      <p>Genealogical papers include a biographical sketch of 
         <persname>[Solbiger] Henkel</persname>, genealogical notes,
         and the record of the family of 
         <persname>Gerhard Henkel</persname>. Other religious papers
         include biblical and doctrinal expositions and miscellaneous
         hymns.</p>
      <p>The correspondence, chiefly in German, contains letters
         from ministers of the 
         <corpname>Tennessee Synod</corpname>from areas of 
         <geogname>Georgia</geogname>, 
         <geogname>North Carolina</geogname>, 
         <geogname>Tennessee</geogname>, and 
         <geogname>Western Virginia</geogname>. Also present are
         numerous petitions both in English and German from
         congregations in remote areas of 
         <geogname>North Carolina</geogname>and 
         <geogname>Tennessee</geogname>requesting a visiting pastor or
         permanent minister to come to their churches.</p>
      <p>A letter from 
         <persname>Ephraim R. Conrad</persname>of 
         <geogname>Missouri</geogname>to 
         <persname>Ambrose Henkel</persname>, 1835 June 28, outlines a
         proposal to establish a 
         <corpname>Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church</corpname>.
