      <head>SCOPE AND CONTENT</head>
      <p>This addition to the papers of the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>of 
         <geogname>New Market, Virginia</geogname>, consists of ca. 475
         items (4 Hollinger boxes, ca. 2 linear feet), 1805-1941, and
         contains correspondence, business and legal papers,
         genealogical material, account books, photographs, notes,
         block cuts, subscription lists, minute books, printed
         material, and manuscripts.</p>
      <p>The nineteenth century correspondents of the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>are listed alphabetically in
         the folder listing section of this guide beginning on page
         five with a brief note concerning the content of the letters.
         Mr. 
         <persname>John G. Stewart</persname>, retired professor of 
         <corpname>James Madison University</corpname>, has supplied
         notes concerning the content of those letters in German. Most
         of the correspondence was addressed to Dr. 
         <persname>Solomon Henkel</persname>and Dr. 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>.</p>
      <p>The correspondence of the 
         <corpname>Henkel Family Association</corpname>contains the
         following topics: a discussion about the inscriptions on the 
         <geogname>Hinkle Fort</geogname>monument and the memorial for 
         <persname>John Justus Henckel</persname>with notes on the
         history of 
         <geogname>Hinkle's Fort</geogname>and 
         <persname>John Justus Henckel</persname>(1935 Aug 21); remarks
         concerning 
         <persname>Christina Hinkle</persname>and 
         <persname>Isaac Harmon</persname>upon the unveiling of the
         monument to 
         <persname>John Justus Henckel</persname>by 
         <persname>J.W. Harmon</persname>of 
         <geogname>Parsons, West Virginia</geogname>(1937 Jan 25); 
         <persname>Jacob Henkel</persname>'s property in 
         <geogname>West Virginia</geogname>(1937 Sep 20); information
         regarding 
         <persname>Angeline Miller</persname>and 
         <persname>Adam Sheets</persname>(1940 Jan 6); and

      <p>Some items in the business and legal papers include a
         memorandum of type to be secured in

         purchase a "boalting cloth No. 8" for use in 
         <persname>John Coiner</persname>'s flour mill (1834 Jun 3); a
         fine for 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>'s non-attendance at the
         regimental muster in Captain Neff's Company (1839); plans for 
         <persname>Godfred Hinkle</persname>'s barn (1840 Feb 20); a 
         <corpname>Land Office Treasury</corpname>Warrant # 18063 to 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>for 590 acres (1849 Nov
         26); 
         <persname>Solomon Henkel</persname>'s memorandum book with
         notes for the settling of his estate (1856 Feb 28); a bill of
         type to be secured in 
         <geogname>Baltimore</geogname>at Spaldings (1837 Apr 26);
         typed copies of 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>land patents, surveys, and
         deeds in 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>and 
         <geogname>West Virginia</geogname>(n.d.).</p>
      <p>Genealogical materials include a 
         <famname>Conrad family</famname>and 
         <famname>Keyser family</famname>notebook (1917); a "family
         record of Henkel Stock" as copied by Dr. 
         <persname>C.C. Henkel</persname>and Rev. 
         <persname>D.M. Henkel</persname>, partially related by Dr. 
         <persname>Solomon Henkel</persname>(n.d.); and miscellaneous
         notes and manuscripts concerning the 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>.</p>
      <p>Miscellaneous papers contains notes about Rev. Reck's
         sermons taken by [ 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>] (1825); a phrenological
         analysis of the head of 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>(1841 Apr 2); the
         marriage certificate of 
         <persname>Gideon Koiner</persname>and 
         <persname>Rebecca M. Henkel</persname>(1853 Nov 14); a
         qualitative analysis of a sample of water made by 
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>Professor 
         <persname>J.W. Mallet</persname>(1892 Oct 15); the historical
         address "One Army of the Living God" given before the 
         <corpname>Henkel Memorial Association</corpname>in 
         <geogname>Philadelphia, Pennsylvania</geogname>, concerning
         the contributions of the 
         <famname>Henkel Family</famname>(1917); minutes of the 
         <corpname>Henkel Memorial Association</corpname>(n.d.); and an
         engraving of a printing press patented by 
         <persname>Peter Smith</persname>and manufactured by 
         <corpname>Robert Hoe and Company</corpname>, 
         <geogname>New York</geogname>(n.d.).</p>
      <p>Also present are three bound volumes of records pertaining
         to the 
         <corpname>New Market Academy</corpname>, including minutes,
         subscription lists, resignation letters of its professors, and
         other loose material found in the volumes, 1838-1941. Dr. 
         <persname>Solomon Henkel</persname>was one of the original
         Trustees appointed on February 21, 1817, when the 
         <corpname>New Market Academy</corpname>was incorporated. The 
         <famname>Henkel family</famname>has been represented on the 
         <corpname>Board of Trustees of the New Market
         Academy</corpname>throughout its history by such men as 
         <persname>Samuel G. Henkel</persname>and 
         <persname>C.C. Henkel</persname>.</p>
