      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This collection, comprised of ca. 250 items, 1807-1864,
         consists of correspondence of
         <persname>Ann Carter Oliver</persname>,
         <persname>Lucy H. Oliver</persname>,
         <persname>Lucy (Oliver) Cocke</persname>, and other members of
         the
         <famname>Oliver family</famname>and
         <famname>Cocke family</famname>of central
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>. The correspondence, 1807-1830,
         is primarily that of
         <persname>Benjamin Oliver</persname>, originally from
         <geogname>Hanover County</geogname>and later a resident of "
         <corpname>Union Hall</corpname>, "
         <geogname>Albemarle County, Virginia</geogname>, and his wife,
         <persname>Lucy H. Oliver</persname>. These letters are chiefly
         concerned with family news or business matters. Correspondents
         include:
         <persname>M. Braxton</persname>;
         <persname>George Clark</persname>, brother-in-law of
         <persname>Benjamin Oliver</persname>and
         <persname>Lucy H. Oliver</persname>, of
         <geogname>Lexington, Virginia</geogname>;
         <persname>Charles C. Page</persname>;
         <persname>Ann Tomlin</persname>and
         <persname>W. W. Tomlin</persname>, sister and brother-in-law
         of
         <persname>Lucy H. Oliver</persname>, of "
         <corpname>Oak Hill</corpname>, "
         <geogname>Richmond County, Virginia</geogname>;
         <persname>Newman Williamson Barnes</persname>; and,
         <persname>Lucy H. Barnes</persname>of
         <geogname>Falmouth, Virginia</geogname>. There are two
         letters, August 19, 1807 and January 18, 1817, concerning
         payment of tuition for the "little girls," probably
         <persname>Tomlin</persname>'s nieces; one letter is addressed
         to Mrs.
         <persname>Ann Hackley</persname>of a school at
         <geogname>Wilderness</geogname>in
         <geogname>Spotsylvania County, Virginia</geogname>. An 1813
         letter to
         <persname>Lucy Tomlin</persname>contains news of the British
         burning
         <geogname>Hampton, Virginia</geogname>, and the militia being
         called. There is also correspondence between
         <persname>Lucy H. Tomlin</persname>of "
         <corpname>Clifton</corpname>, "
         <geogname>Hanover, Virginia</geogname>, and
         <persname>Sarah B. Campbell</persname>of
         <geogname>Lynchburg, Virginia</geogname>, regarding the death
         of Mrs.
         <persname>Campbell</persname>'s brother, who had been engaged
         to Lucy.</p>
      <p>Later correspondence, 1831-1864, is primarily that of
         <persname>Ann Carter "Nannie" Oliver</persname>and
         <persname>Lucy (Oliver) Cocke</persname>, daughters of
         <persname>Benjamin Oliver</persname>and
         <persname>Lucy H. Oliver</persname>.
         <persname>Benjamin Oliver</persname>died in 1820, and
         <persname>Lucy H. Cocke</persname>sometime shortly after 1830,
         leaving their daughters
         <persname>Ann Oliver</persname>and
         <persname>Lucy Oliver</persname>as wards of Dr.
         <persname>Corbin Braxton</persname>of "
         <corpname>Chericoke</corpname>, "
         <geogname>King William County, Virginia</geogname>.
         <persname>Lucy Oliver</persname>married Dr.
         <persname>Cary Charles Cocke</persname>, third son of
         <persname>John Hartwell Cocke</persname>, and resided at "
         <corpname>Lower Bremo</corpname>, "
         <geogname>Fluvanna County, Virginia</geogname>. Correspondence
         chiefly concerns news of family and friends. Two letters,
         December 24, 1833 and April 4, 1834, from
         <persname>Ann Coleman</persname>to
         <persname>Lucy Oliver</persname>, describe life at
         <corpname>Cedar Park School</corpname>at "
         <corpname>West River</corpname>, "
         <geogname>Anne Arundel County, Maryland</geogname>, mentioning
         her course of studies, her work for a colonization society,
         and the objections of local gentlemen of
         <geogname>Prince Georges County, Maryland</geogname>to a black
         Sunday school conducted by the students and teachers.
         <persname>Margaret Mercer</persname>, daughter of
         <persname>John Mercer</persname>, governor of
         <geogname>Maryland</geogname>, operated the
         <corpname>Cedar Park School</corpname>. Of interest are four
         letters, 1842-1843, from
         <persname>Corbin Braxton</persname>and
         <persname>Carter Braxton</persname>to
         <persname>Cary Charles Cocke</persname>regarding their use of
         <persname>Cyrus McCormick</persname>'s new reaper for
         harvesting crops.</p>
      <p>Other correspondents include:
         <persname>Balsora Barnes</persname>of
         <geogname>Falmouth, Virginia</geogname>;
         <persname>Margaret Mercer</persname>;
         <persname>Philip St. George Cocke</persname>, second son of
         <persname>John Hartwell Cocke</persname>;
         <persname>M. E. Fitzhugh</persname>of
         <geogname>Falmouth, Virginia</geogname>;
         <persname>Sally Elizabeth Courtney (Bowdoin) Cocke</persname>,
         wife of
         <persname>Philip St. George Cocke</persname>;
         <persname>Nora Macon</persname>;
         <persname>Mira Rosa Wilson</persname>of
         <persname>Norfolk, Virginia</persname>;
         <persname>Fanny Coalter</persname>of "
         <corpname>Ingleside</corpname>";
         <persname>Mikosa Wilson</persname>;
         <persname>Mary W. Braxton</persname>of "
         <corpname>Chericoke</corpname>, "
         <geogname>King William County, Virginia</geogname>;
         <persname>Olivia [ ]</persname>of
         <geogname>Baltimore, Maryland</geogname>;
         <persname>Fanny Braxton</persname>;
         <persname>Lucy Braxton</persname>; and
         <persname>Tomlin Braxton</persname>.</p>
      <p>There are several letters of interest. There is a July 4,
         1840 letter written on
         <corpname>The Delaware</corpname>. A letter of December 8,
         1841 describes a slave wedding. Letters of May 9 and May 14,
         1843 mention the deaths of
         <persname>[Corbin] Braxton</persname>and
         <persname>Louisa Cocke</persname>, respectively. A letter in
         1844 discusses politics--the lower class democrats and that
         every lady should be a Whig. A July 24, 1846 letter refers to
         a thieving slave who should either be hung or sold. There is a
         May 21, 1847 letter which discusses the marriage of two
         servants; General
         <persname>John Hartwell Cocke</persname>inquires about the
         character of the girl and feels it necessary to say that her
         intended is lazy. On November 12, 1847,
         <persname>Corbin Braxton</persname>writes regarding problems
         with the faculty at
         <corpname>William and Mary</corpname>. A 1850 letter mentions
         hearing
         <persname>Jenny Lind</persname>sing.</p>
