      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This collection of ca. 100 items, 1799-1887 and n.d.,
consists chiefly of correspondence among the extended members
         of the
         <famname>Randolph family</famname>, descendants of
<persname>Thomas Jefferson</persname>. The majority of the
correspondence is between the granddaughter of
         <persname>Thomas Jefferson</persname>,
         <persname>Septimia Anna Cary (Randolph)
         Meikleham</persname>(1814-1887) and her siblings,
         <persname>Virginia Jefferson (Randolph)
         Trist</persname>(1801-1882),
         <persname>Cornelia Jefferson Randolph</persname>(1799-1871),
         <persname>Ellen Wayles (Randolph)
         Coolidge</persname>(1796-1876), and
         <persname>Meriwether Lewis Randolph</persname>(1810-1837).
Correspondents also include Septimia's nieces and nephews,
         <persname>Martha Jefferson (Trist)
         Burke</persname>(1826-1915),
         <persname>Ellen R. (Coolidge) Dwight</persname>(1826-1894),
         <persname>Isaetta Carter (Randolph)
         Hubard</persname>(1835-1888), and
         <persname>Lewis Carter Randolph</persname>(1838-1887); her
         son,
         <persname>William Moreland Meikleham</persname>(1839-1889);
         and her grandsons,
         <persname>Thomas Mann Randolph Meikleham</persname>(1869-1954)
         and
         <persname>Henry Parish Meikleham</persname>(1872-1937).</p>
      <p>Letters from
         <persname>Septimia Randolph</persname>in
         <geogname>Pensacola, Florida</geogname>, December 27, n.y. and
January 26, 1838, tell about her adventurous trip to the area,
her social life, and how various groups of people--"native
         Creoles," "whites," "quadroons," and "negroes"--were
segregated in a theater. After leaving
         <geogname>Pensacola</geogname>, Septimia went to
<geogname>Havana, Cuba</geogname>to be with her sister,
         <persname>(Randolph) Trist</persname>and her family. While
         there, she met and married
         <persname>David Scott Meikleham</persname>(1804-1849). Letters
         from
         <geogname>Havana</geogname>, February 16, 1838, November 3,
1839, and June 15, 1840, discuss life there, including living
outside of the city walls. Later, on October 22, [1843],
         Septimia writes from
         <geogname>Glasgow, Scotland</geogname>about its people and
land, and describes her visits to
         <corpname>Edin Castle</corpname>,
         <corpname>Holyrood Palace</corpname>, and the
         <geogname>Highlands</geogname>.</p>
<p>During June and July of 1882, correspondence between
         <persname>Septimia (Randolph) Meikleham</persname>and family
members was concerned with congressional bills to aid
         <persname>Thomas Jefferson</persname>'s heirs, particularly
his granddaughter, Septimia, and the possible removal of
         <persname>Thomas Jefferson</persname>'s remains from
         <corpname>Monticello</corpname>to
         <geogname>Washington, D. C.</geogname>A letter, August 4,
         n.y., from
         <persname>Virginia (Randolph) Trist</persname>discusses the
         new owner of
         <corpname>Monticello</corpname>,
<persname>Jefferson Michael [sic] Levy</persname>, and the
work he is having done on the estate.</p>
<p>A good source for information on the descendants of
         <persname>Thomas Jefferson</persname>is Collected Papers of
         the Monticello Association, edited by
         <persname>George Green Shackelford</persname>, (The Monticello
Association, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1984). Biographies and
         genealogical charts are included.</p>
