This collection consists of educational materials belonging to University of Virginia School of Medicine student William Edward "Bill" Nelson, MD during his first two years of medical school. During Dr. Nelson's first year (1983-1984) and second year (1984-1985), the materials consist of handouts containing Dr. Nelson's notes, marginalia, and highlighting and were created by faculty, residents, and others.
William Edward ("Bill") Nelson, MD, MPH, MPA (1961 - ) is an orthopedic surgeon, aerospace medicine physician, and retired United States Air Force colonel whose career has combined clinical practice, military medicine, sports medicine, aerospace medicine, and human performance research.
Nelson earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Virginia in 1979 and a Master of Education in Sports Medicine from the University in 1983. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1987. Following medical school, he completed a surgical internship (1988) and a residency in orthopedic surgery (1992) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his residency, he completed a fellowship in hand surgery and sports medicine at the University of Virginia (1992), followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama (1993). He later completed a residency in aerospace medicine at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in 2005. Nelson also earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard University in 2004, a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2012, and completed the Air War College Non-Resident Studies Program in 2000.
Commissioned into the United States Air Force Medical Corps in 1991, Nelson served for more than three decades in a series of clinical, operational, command, and policy positions. His assignments included Chief of Surgical Services at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea; Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland; Flight Surgeon with the 31st Special Operations Squadron and Group Surgeon for the 352nd Special Operations Group; Commander of the 39th Medical Operations Squadron at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey; Commander of the 435th Aerospace Medicine Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and Chief of Aerospace Medicine Policy and Operations in the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. As an orthopedic surgeon and Air Force physician, Nelson specialized in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries while integrating orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and aerospace medicine in support of military readiness and the health of service members.
From 2019 to 2024, Nelson served as Medical and Human Performance Division Chief within the Air Force Special Warfare Directorate, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. In this role, he directed medical and human performance programs supporting more than 6,000 Special Warfare personnel and served as Medical Director of the Air Force Physiological Episodes Action Team, leading efforts to address aviation-related physiologic events in collaboration with the F-35 Joint Program Office, the U.S. Navy, and other military partners.
Following his retirement from active military service, Nelson served as Principal General Health Science Officer and Human Effectiveness Program Monitor in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Science, Technology, and Engineering. There he oversaw scientific and technical programs in human effectiveness, human-machine teaming, and biotechnology while chairing the International F-35 Aeromedical Community of Interest and leading collaborative medical research initiatives between the United States Department of Defense and the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
Throughout his military career, Nelson participated in numerous contingency operations, including Operations Joint Endeavor, Joint Guard, Joint Forge, Allied Force, Southern Watch, Northern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Joint Task Force Noble Anvil, and Joint Task Force Lebanon. A Chief Flight Surgeon, he accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours, including 33 combat and 16 combat-support sorties in a wide variety of military aircraft.
Nelson served on the orthopedic surgery faculties of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the University of California San Francisco Orthopaedic Trauma Institute. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
In recognition of his distinguished military medical career, Nelson received the 2018 Air Force Hero of Military Medicine Award, presented by the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General to honor individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and selfless dedication to advancing military medicine and improving the lives and health of wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and civilians. His additional honors include two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, and the Department of the Air Force Award for Meritorious Civilian Service.
The collection was donated in binders that were numbered, so the materials have maintained original order as designated by the creator of the records.
