The first attempt to establish a Virginia-North Carolina minor league in 1901 ended in failure but the community leaders didn't give up and were finally able to establish a second Virginia-North Carolina League in 1905. This league, a Class D minor league didn't last either. Only four teams joined the league: the Danville Tobacconists, the Charlotte Water Drinkers, the Greensboro Farmers, and the Salisbury-Spenser Esses/Twins. The Danville team were the league champions and continued to play exhibition games for the rest of the season. With time, its backers were able to convince investors in five other Virginia cities (Richmond, Roanoke, Portsmouth, NoOrfolk, and Lynchburg) and they joined to form the Virginia State League the following year.

Virginia-North Carolina Baseball League score book, dated 1905, 1909, 0.03 cubic foot, Spalding's official base ball score book used to score games between August 12th and 16th, 1905. Games were played in Charlotte, N.C. including a double header between Charlotte and Greensboro, Charlotte and Danville, games at Edenton between Edenton and Colerain, and games at Edenton between Edenton and Colerain. There are also games from an unidentified North Carolina league in 1909.
