Biographical Information

The Center for Gender Studies at Radford University was founded in 1989 by RU Psychology professors Hilary Lips and Jerri Frantzve. Dr. Lips is the current director and has been since 1989. The Center's mission is to promote gender-relevant knowledge and experience for students and other members of the academic community through service, research, conferences, and programming. The Center supports student research conferences since 1996. The conferences examine gender through art, film, education, and media, focusing on such topics as sexuality, power, criminal justice, gendered identities, spirituality, literacy, violence, and other topics as examined through undergraduate and research.
The Center encourages a global view on women's issues by inviting visiting professors from different colleges and countries to come to Radford University to share their knowledge and research with RU students. The Center promotes individual or group research projects through the Eleanor E. Kemp Memorial Research Fund, a grant that funds student research.
