<p>From Biography.com:

Phillis Wheatley was purchased and enslaved by John Wheatley of Massachusetts as a personal servant to his wife. They educated Phillis, and she began writing poetry. He published her first poem at age 12. Her first volume of poetry <title>Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral</title> in 1773.</p>  </bioghist>
