    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>This scrapbook contains newspaper articles and clippings that primarily relate to African Americans and race relations in the United States. Subjects include government, politics, art, culture, and locals. The scrapbook ranges in date from circa 1917-1946. </p><p>Loose clippings were placed within an archival envelope. Also loose from the scrapbook is a pamphlet on the Scottsboro Case and the opinion of Judge James E. Horton and one titled "America's Tenth Man: A brief survey of the Negro's Part in American History."</p>  </scopecontent>

<p>Carther A. Lewis was born in Lexington, Virginia on January 1, 1879 and died on March 18, 1965. He was married to Susie Mary Harris. Lewis is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.</p>  </bioghist>
