    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>William Gilham was born in 1818 in Vincennes, Indiana. He graduated from the United States Military Academy Class in 1840. He was a United States Army officer and a VMI faculty member from 1846 to 1864. Gilham died in 1872 in Vermont.</p>  </bioghist>
