<p>Withers Alexander Burress was born in 1894 in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated VMI in 1914. From 1916 to 1954 he was a United States Army officer. He commanded the 100th Infantry Division and was the Commanding General, First Army. Burress died in 1977 in Arlington, Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>The Withers A. Burress papers consist of papers that document Burress' United States Army career for the period from 1942 to 1954. Included are photos, a subject file on the 100th Infantry Division, scrapbooks, correspondence, orders, and memos. Other items include retirement correspondence (dated 1957-1971).</p>  </scopecontent>
