The primary purpose of the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Development is to provide proposals, advice, and assistance on land use, development review, and zoning issues to the groups and individuals who make decisions on addressing these issues within the county. The Department of Planning and Development is divided into five branches: the Planning Division, the Zoning Evaluation Division, the Zoning Administration Division, the Community Revitalization Section, and the Urban Centers Section.
The primary duties of the Planning Division (also known as the Division of Planning) include maintaining the county's Comprehensive Plan, processing all suggested and required amendments to the Comprehensive Plan text and map, evaluating land use and development proposals for conformity with the Comprehensive Plan and measures related to environmental, development and public facility impacts, preparing various planning and policy studies which explore development, land use, environmental and public facility issues, and offering recommendations for future direction.
Folded pamphlet that provides an overview of the plans for the development of Vienna, Virginia, created by the Fairfax County Division of Planning, Department of Planning and Financial Management. The front cover shows an illustration of two horses against a light blue background and the title: "Vienna Planning District: A Summary of the Plan Adopted by the Board of Supervisors - October 2, 1967." The booklet opens to a two page spread of text titled "The Background," with an illustration of running horses against a light blue background in a band at the end of the bottom right section of text. The booklet then further opens to display a larger section of text titled "The Plan", with a small illustration of running horses against a light blue background in a band in between sections of text. The full pamphlet then unfolds to reveal a large interior map illustrating using color coding the comprehensive plan for the Vienna Planning District, with a section at the bottom titled "A Staff Review of Community Facilities" dated January 1970. When refolded the back cover displays a list of "Proposed Land Uses" under the header: "Summary of Land Use Recommendation, Vienna Planning District" dated January 1970, with the seal for the County of Fairfax, Virginia in the bottom left corner.
