    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Sara Mabelle James of Dendron, Virginia was born in 1911 to William Henry and Eunice Belle James. From 1929 to 1933, she attended State Teachers College and graduated with a degree in Latin education. While a student at State Teachers College, James was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Phi Rho, Alpha Phi Sigma, Sodalitas Latina (Latin Club), Choral Club, YWCA, and the Athletic Association.  Additionally, she served as Vice President of El Circulo Espanol (Spanish Club).  In 1944, James married Floy Edward Nichols, an Army veteran from Groesbeck, Texas. Sara James Nichols taught for 35 years in Isle of Wight and Norfolk County public schools and spent the last 14 years of her career as principal of the Little Creek Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>The correspondence in this collection, written by Sara Mabelle James while a student at State Teachers College, was acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations.  It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.</p>  </custodhist>
