Biographical sketch
The oral history tapes and transcripts in this collection are from interviews conducted by students from various classes at Longwood University over the course of 5 years. The interviews all pertain to the subject of school segregation and the struggle for civil rights in Prince Edward County and particularly Farmville, Virginia.
Ownership and Custodial History
Audio recordings were given to the library periodically from the late 1990s through the early 2000s. Greenwood Library interns and staff completed transcripts, after tapes were transferred to the library.
Scope and content
This collection contains 44 tapes of 37 oral history interviews and transcripts from 29 of those interviews conducted between 1997 and 2002. The topics of the interviews cover broadly: the struggle for civil rights in Prince Edward County, school desegregation, and the closing of the public schools in Prince Edward County.
Restrictions on Access
Interviews without consent and release forms are not listed and are not available for research purposes.
Restrictions on Access
While the collection includes the original recordings for these interviews, all audio has been converted to a digital format and is available online in Longwood's Digital Commons. The library will not provide access to the original audiocassette tape.

The sound quality of some of recordings is not ideal and the interviews may be difficult to decipher.
