Historical and Biographical Information

Beginning in 1946, the League of Virginia Counties published an independent monthly magazine called “Virginia and the Virginia County” which was founded to tell the Virginia story through words and photographs. The magazine initially spotlighted a specific Virginia county each month, but coverage eventually grew to focus more on the building, construction, agricultural, road, and other industries in Virginia. The periodical often featured notable buildings that were being constructed throughout the state.

In January 1954, the magazine became “Virginia and the Virginia Record” after the magazine acquired “The Record” an honored Virginia journal founded in 1878. In June 1954, the Virginia Publishers Wing Inc. assumed publication of the magazine. The publisher shortened the title to just “Virginia Record” beginning with the May 1955 issue. In 1982, “Virginia Record” became the official Journal of the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects focusing on Virginia’s built environment. The Virginia AIA phased out the magazine in 1989.

In March 1952, “Virginia and the Virginia County” featured Fairfax County on its cover story. The issue included articles about Fairfax County’s new county executive government, agricultural extension program, home demonstration and 4-H club, Sunset Hills Farm, the Fairfax Hunt, and a lengthy article about the history of Fairfax County by Randolph M. Loughborough.

In July 1952, Don V. James, Executive Editor of “Virginia and the Virginia County Magazine” sent County Executive Carlton C. Massey the print blocks used in connection with the Fairfax County feature in the March 1952 magazine.

An original copy of the magazine is held by the Virginia Room and can be found under the call number VRARE 975.505 V 1952 V.6 No.3.
