Historical and Biographical Information

Franconia, Virginia earned its name from William Fowle’s 191-acre farm called “Frankhonia Farm”. The farm was located at the present day intersection of Franconia Road and Fleet Drive. In 1871, Fowle’s son, Robert Rollins Fowle, sold a portion of the farm to the Alexandria & Fredericksburg Railway Company, later renamed the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad. The railroad erected a station on the site, named Franconia, which closed in 1952. The area saw an explosion in suburban development beginning in the 1950s.
