<p>Rowland Horsely Bates (1787-1871) was a general business owner in the former Israel's Gap. His son, Edwin James (1812-1889), was the executor of his will and took over his father's debt and business dealings. Their family legacy exists today as Batesville, named after the Bates family for their contributions to the community.
