Francis Bell (1820-1893) was an international cattle dealer from Augusta County, Virginia. He frequented Pulaski County and Montgomery County, Virginia, for business. He became well acquainted with Major James R. Kent, an enslaver and plantation owner in Montgomery County, through his work as a cattle dealer. Bell later married Kent's daughter, Sarah, in 1855. They settled in Pulaski County, where Bell would go on to become one of the largest land owners in the post-American Civil War era.

This collection contains a letter from Francis Bell, a cattle dealer from Augusta County, Virginia, to Major James R. Kent, an enslaver and plantation owner in Montgomery County, Virginia. In the letter dated October 18, 1860, Bell asks Kent to sell him his stock of cattle directly rather than going through the firm of Crouse and [Sons?].
