The letter dated July 2, 1851, discusses the health of Levi Holbrook and provides a variety of updates from Danville, including discussion about a man named Dr. Saunders murdering a man named A. S. Terry (or Jerry?) after a disagreement.</abstract>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Levi Holbrook (1785-1872) was born in Holden, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Holbrook attended The University of Vermont and received his PhD from the University of North Carolina. Holbrook arrived in Danville, Virginia, some time after 1810 to establish the Danville Male Academy in 1817. He went on to also found the Danville Female Academy in 1828. Levi Holbrook married Eliza Gout of Massachusetts in 1827. Together they had one son, Levi Holbrook, Jr., in 1836. After Holbrook retired, he continued to live in Danville until his death in 1872.</p><p>External Sources: </p><p>National Register Of Historic Places Registration Form.
