During the American Civil War, the 36th Battalion Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army was formed in February 1863 and was comprised initially of four companies, later five. The Battalion was first placed into A. G. Jenkins, W. E. Jones, B. T. Johnson, and Payne's Brigade under W. H. F. Payne. This battalion would go onto fight in Gettysburg, West Virginia, Tennessee, and the Shenandoah Valley. The battalion disbanded while stationed near Appomatax under the command of Major James W. Sweeney.

This letter is from a Confederate cavalryman of the 36th Battalion Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army to a "Miss E" on February 24th, 1864, at the headquarters of the battalion during the American Civil War. The author describes his experience at the battle of Jonesville, which occured from January 2nd to January 3rd, in which the Confederate soldiers were led under the guidance of General William "Grumble" Jones. This battle resulted in the cavalryman receiving a slight wound to his head, and a Confederate victory. He also provides an emotional sentiment as he wishes to be with "Miss E" and he hopes for an end to the war.
