Historical Note

Pittsylvania County is the largest county in the Commonwealth of Virginia and was established in 1767. The county is named in honor of William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, in recognition for his support of the American colonies during Stamp Act Crisis in 1765. The county is formed from the western portion of Halifax County and took on its size when Henry and Patrick counties separated from it in 1777.

External source:

"Pittsylvania County History", pittsylvaniacountyva.gov, https://www.pittsylvaniacountyva.gov/community/about-pittsylvania-county/history-of-pittsylvania-county, accessed on June 7, 2023.
 </bioghist>
