    <abstract id="aspace_c273f4ee9083f1d26db4ce9b8becdeaf" label="Abstract">This collection includes the written minutes and various papers of the Lee Literary Society from 1873 to 1926, and the minutes of the united Lee and Maury Literary Society during the 1928-29 session. The Lee Literary Society was formed from the split of the Virginia Literary Society in 1873 along with its counterpart the Maury Literary Society. LLS helped create the first student publication, the <title render="italic">Gray Jacket</title>, in 1875. The LLS folded in 1928.</abstract>

<p>The Records of the Lee Literary Society were recieved by the University Libraries and Special Collections and University Archives in multiple accruals prior to 1985 and in 1978 and 1988.</p>  </acqinfo>

<p>The processing, arrangement, and description of the Records of the Lee Literary Society was completed in July 2021. Initial description was completed prior to 2002.</p>  </processinfo>

    <head>Administrative History</head>
<p>The Virginia Literary Society was formed in 1872 as the first student organization at the College. This Society split into the Sophsonian and Philomathian Societies in 1873. In February of that year, the Sophsonian Society changed its name to the Lee Literary Society and the Philomathian became the Maury Literary Society in May. Together these two organizations established the <title render="italic">Gray Jacket</title>, the first student publication, in 1875. In 1928, the two societies merged, but then folded one year later.</p>  </bioghist>

    <head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>This collection includes three volumes of handwritten minutes (1881-1892, 1892-1903, 1921-1926), commencement exercise programs of the Lee Literary Society (1880, 1885, 1886, 1893), other programs and announcements, membership application forms, constitutions and bylaws (1907, 1922), and handwritten notes. The minutes of the united Lee and Maury Literary of 1928-1929 is included as well as a commencement exercise program of the Sophsonian Society, 1873.</p>  </scopecontent>
