Administrative History

The people photographed in this album were doctors and nurses at a hospital in Danville, Virginia during the 1930s. The hospital is most likely the Memorial Hospital or Community Hopsital in Danville, Virginia. The Memorial Hospital was built after John Edward Hughes, a wealthy tobacco dealer, left $250,000 in his will to build a new hospital in 1922. The Community Hospital was built in 1919 and owned by Dr. Thomas W. Edmunds, who sold it to Memorial Hospital in 1929.

Source:

Scope and Content

This collection contains a series of photograhs of the doctors and nurses, most likely from the Memorial Hospital or Community Hospital in Danville, Virginia, during the 1930s. Some of the photographs are labeled on the back. One photo of a group of nurses is labelled "My Class", making it likely the album creator was a nursing student or teacher at the hospital.
 </scopecontent>
