    <head>Historical Note</head>
<p>The National Association of Union Ex-Prisoners of War was an organization established in 1873 by former Union soldiers who spent time in Confederate prisons during the American Civil War. The national association was established in Washington, DC. Individual local chapters were created throughout the United States and remained active until at least the 1920s. The national organization designed badges, ribbons, and pins which individul members and chapters adopted to wear representing states for which they served and prisons in which they were held captive. </p><p>The 1887-1888 Constitution and By-laws of the organization, which includes information on its structure, is <extref xlink:href="https://www.loc.gov/resource/mfd.18019" xlink:show="new" xlink:actuate="onRequest">available online</extref> through the Library of Congress.</p> </bioghist>
