    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Jr. (1878-1975) of Campbell County, Virginia, attended Virginia Agriculture and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) from 1896 through 1899. Nowlin also played the mandolin and violin with a group of other young men that would perform at school dances for free. </p><p>Nowlin was the son of Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Sr., and Lelia Pendleton, and he married Buelah Hall Terrell. <p>This collection contains an original cadet coatee from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) dated 1896. The coat is woolen blue-gray with a cotton lining. It was manufactured by D. Klein and Bro. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A piece of tape inside the coat indicates the coat belonged to VAMC student Greenwood H. Nowlin, Jr.</p>  </scopecontent>
