    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Stephen Curwin was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in 1839. He is described as being five-feet-ten, of fair complexion, and having red hair and grey eyes. Before entering service, Curwin was a farrier by trade. Curwin enlisted with Company C of the 45th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry of the United States Army on September 27, 1861, during the American Civil War. The regiment participated in many battles including Secessionville, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, and Petersburg.     <head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>The collection consists of the American Civil War discharge papers of Stephen Curwin, an enlisted Union soldier in the 45th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. The papers detail Curwin's physical description, date of enlistment, and date and reason for discharge. The discharge papers were completed and approved by Col. Jonathan S. Belknap of the 85th New York Infantry.</p>  </scopecontent>
