    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>C. Fichtel was from Neulingen, Germany. He served as a non-commissioned officer--probably a fourier (company quartermaster)--in the Königl. Württembergischen Feldartillerie (Field Artillery) during the late nineteenth century. Fichtel may be the Christian Ludwig Fichtel (1827-1888) mentioned in a document within the collection. Also mentioned is a Karl Gotlob Fichtel (1830-1901), who immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was the father of Charles, Emma, Clara and Augusta.</p> </bioghist>

    <head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>This collection contains the papers of C. Fichtel, a non-commissioned officer serving in a German field artillery regiment during the late nineteenth century. The collection contains a copy of Oberlieutenant Strack's <title render="italic">Notiz-buch zum Gebrauch im Felde für der Unteroffizier der Königl. Württembergishen Feldartillerie</title>, a notebook for the use of non-commissioned officers in a field artillery regiment. Published in Ludwigsburg in 1868, the book is comprised of facsimile copies of handwritten notes, tables, diagrams and illustrations relating to the operation of a field artillery battery. Also from Strack is a calling card, inscribed to Fichtel. The collection also includes a few miscellaneous pages bearing German handwriting, as well as a small page of genealogical data on the Fichtel family, an entry copied in English from Burke's <title render="italic">General Armory</title> for the Norman family coat-of-arms, a carte-de-visite of an unidentified infant (portrait created by J. A. Keenan, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania photographer), and a photograph of an ornate wooden chair.</p> </scopecontent>
