    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>John Strode Barbour, Jr., was born in Catalpa, Virginia, ( near Culpeper) on December 29, 1820 to John Strode Barbour, a member of the United States House of Representatives. After obtaining a law degree from the University of Virginia and passing the bar in 1841, John Strode Barbour, Jr., set up practice in Culpeper, Virginia. Barbour served as president of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad Company from 1852 to 1881. In addition to his duties as railroad president, Barbour served in the state House of Delegates from 1847 to 1851. From 1881 to 1887 and 1889 until his death in 1892, Barbour served as a Democratic senator from Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>The John Barbour, Jr., Letters are comprised of two one‐page missives from a Virginia senator and president of the Orange and Alexander Railroad Company to William M. Burwell, Esquire. The letters were written to Alexandria, Virginia, in 1854, and concern raising support in Albemarle County for the extension of the railroad between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Also mentioned are <title render="doublequote">internal improvements</title> in addition to several appreciative and laudatory remarks to Mr. Burwell.</p>  </scopecontent>
