    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>James Henry Lane (1833-1907) attended Virginia Military Institute and was a brigadier general in the Civil War as part of the Confederate Army. After the war, he was a professor and first commandant of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) from 1872 to 1880. He also taught at the School of Mines in Missouri, now Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Alabama Polytechnic University, now Auburn University.
