The collection contains a 50-page scrapbook compiled by Valentine with newspaper clippings written in 1911-1912 about his regiment's war activities, photographs from a monument dedication ceremony for his regiment in New Berne, North Carolina in 1908, and 39 ink wash scenes sketched during the war years.</abstract>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Herbert E. Valentine (1841-1917) served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, and he authored <title render="italic">Story of Co. F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteers in the War for the Union 1861-1865</title> (W.H. Clarke &amp; Co., Boston, 1896). He was a photographer, who enlisted while living in Salem, Massachusetts. He is buried in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts.</p><p>Sources:

<p>The Herbert E. Valentine Scrapbook is a 50-page scrapbook compiled by Valentine, who served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Scrapbook comprises a series of newspaper clippings from the Salem [Massachusetts] <title render="italic">News</title>, written in 1911-1912 by Valentine, giving details of his regiment's war activities. It also includes photographs, many taken in New Berne, North Carolina, by Valentine in 1908, during dedication of a monument to members of his regiment.
