    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Tom Wolfe (Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr.), son of Thomas K. Sr. and Helen Perkins Hughes Wolfe, was born in Richmond, Virginia, on March 2, 1930. He attended Washington and Lee University and later obtained a Ph.D. in American studies at Yale University. A pioneer of the "New Journalism" literary movement of the 1960-1970s, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers and as a contributing writer to several national magazines. His first book, <title render="italic">The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby</title>, was published in 1964. He is best known for his books <title render="italic">The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test</title> (1968) and <title render="italic">The Right Stuff</title> (1979). Tom Wolfe died in Manhattan, New York, on May 14, 2018, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>This collection consists of a single letter written by American novelist Tom Wolfe. Dated December 29, 1988, the letter is addressed to "Mrs. Russell" (Frances Hutcheson Russell of Blacksburg, Virginia). Wolfe mentions having spoken to their mutual acquaintance Mike Kipps (co-author with Wolfe's father of <title render="italic">The Production of Field Crops</title>) and their mutual good fortune to have links to "the illustrious Hutcheson family." The letter is accompanied by a stamped envelope addressed to Russell.</p>  </scopecontent>
