The processing, arrangement, and description of the Herbert Hoover Deed was completed in 1979. Additional description was completed in March 2011.
Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was the 31st President of the United States (1929-1933). After winning election, Hoover and his wife Lou Henry decided to establish a retreat close to Washington, D. C., and purchased land in Madison County, Virginia, near the Rapidan River. This retreat became known as Rapidan Camp, and Hoover met with many political, famous, and influential guests there. After losing reelection, Hoover donated Rapidan Camp to the federal government, and the land was incorporated as part of the Shenandoah National Park when it was established in 1935. In 1988, the camp was designated a National Historic Landmark, and it has been an educational historic site open to the public since 2004.

The collection includes a deed of trust of Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry, and William E. Carson, Trustee, for land in Madison County, Virginia, to become part of the Shenandoah National Park. The deed was also signed by Notary Public Nelson Webster.
