Context for Record Type: Business Records, both volumes and loose records, are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These business records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safe keeping by business owners. In other cases, business records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These business record exhibits appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments, these records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debut suits, and contract disputes.

Locality History: Mecklenburg County (Va.) was named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of King George III. It was formed from Lunenburg County in 1764. The county court first met on 11 March 1765. The county seat is Boydton.

Historical Information: William S. Davis was a physician who practiced in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, during the early 19th century.

Scope and Content: The account book, 1810-1814, of William S. Davis, a physician, recorded the accounts of individual customers. The accounts list charges and payments for visits to patients, medication, and other medical services such as extracting teeth, cauterizing cancerous tumours, assistance with pregnancies, and visits to ill enslaved people. Forms of payment include cash, credit, barter of items (cotton seed, whiskey, bacon) and labor (cutting wheat, work on chimney, knitting socks). The volume also recorded transactions related to Davis' estate.
