Scope and Content

These records contain unidentified and unsupported assignments, most of which are from the 18th century. Some of the assignments are for lands due under preemption warrants or warrants issued for colonial war service while the balance is for treasury warrants. One indenture, recorded in Philadelphia in 1785, applies to nineteen surveys on file in the Land Office; it was made between Isaac Sidman and his fellow merchants James Newport, William Kay, John Shields, John Redman, and Robert McKnight, all of Philadelphia. Twenty-eight of the records are signed by John and George May, two brothers from Virginia who settled in what is now Jefferson County, Kentucky. George was a surveyor and both men were land speculators. The period covered is 1775-1903, with the bulk of the records dated between 1775 and 1796.
