      <p>Lee County was named Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794.  It was formed from Russell County in 1792.  Part of Scott County was added in 1823.

      <head>Scope and Content
</head>
      <p>Lee County (Va.) Wills, 1831-1914, record the deceased's plan for how his or her estate was to be divided among his or her heirs following his or her death. Information commonly recorded in wills include the name of the deceased, also referred as the testator; names of heirs; a listing of real and personal property and how it was to be divided among the heirs; names of individuals who were to be the will's executors; the date will was written; and the date will was recorded at the court house. Arrangement is chronological.

      <p>Additional record types found in this collection include fiduciary records (inventories and accounts). They were recorded in the Lee County will books from 1833 to 1914. The collection also includes wills not recorded in will books dating from 1831-1874 and several undated wills.  Also included is a subpoena dated 1907 Sept. 17 (Woodward v. Wilder). Arrangement is alphabetical.</p>
